Veterinary Surgery
Our veterinary team performs a variety of surgeries, including dental procedures and soft tissue surgery, to help improve the health of pets in Orléans and the surrounding area.
Surgical Services for Cats & Dogs
At Gloucester Veterinary Hospital, our goal is to help your pet stay healthy and happy, now and into the future. The wide range of surgical procedures we offer helps us to achieve that goal.
For many pet parents, the idea of bringing their pet in for surgery can be concerning. Please be assured that we only recommend surgery when we feel it is in the best interests of your beloved pet.
We do everything we can to ensure that you fully understand why we are recommending a particular surgery. We want you to feel fully informed and comfortable making the decision before we go ahead with the procedure.
Surgical Procedures
At Gloucester Veterinary Hospital, we perform medical and emergency surgeries to help treat medical conditions in pets or to repair injuries sustained through trauma.
Our Orléans team may perform or refer the following elective and non-elective surgeries:
-
Soft Tissue Surgery
Soft tissue surgery covers a range of ear, nose, and throat procedures as well as mass removals and treatment of flesh wounds. Soft tissue surgery includes everything that does not fall under surgery related to bones, joints, or the neurologic system.
-
Spaying & Neutering
Spaying and neutering are the most common surgical procedures performed. These surgeries sterilize pets, prevent disease, and may provide dogs and cats with an extended life expectancy.
-
C-Sections
During a Cesarean section, we surgically remove puppies or kittens from their mother's uterus. C-sections are typically performed when the mother is unable to give birth naturally.
-
Ocular Surgery
If your pet is experiencing severe pain, redness, or other symptoms in or around their eyes, ocular surgery may be required.
Common ocular surgeries include eyelid tumour removal, cataract surgery, ectropion surgery, entropion surgery, exenteration of the orbit and cherry eye surgery.
-
Mass Removal
Masses can grow on or under pets' skin or inside their body. While some masses may be removed for aesthetic reasons, other masses have the potential to be life-threatening.
-
Foreign Body Removal
Sometimes, foreign objects are ingested by your dog or cat and get lodged inside their body. Other times, accidents leave glass or other materials stuck in a paw or other parts of a pet's body.
Whether your pet has eaten an object they shouldn't have or experienced a physical injury, we can perform foreign body surgery to remove lodged items.
-
Wound Repair
Wounds occur when your pet's tissue has been cut, broken, burnt, torn, or otherwise damaged. It's very important that these wounds be cleaned, disinfected, and appropriately cared for by a veterinarian as soon as possible to avoid infection or other complications.
-
Orthopedic Surgery
Orthopedic surgeries correct injuries and conditions of the bones, ligaments, joints, tendons, and other skeletal structures in your cat or dog. Common veterinary orthopedic surgeries include tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) and femoral head ostectomy (FHO).
-
Dental Surgery
Our veterinarians provide dental surgeries to relieve pain and restore the oral health of dogs and cats. These surgeries can range from tooth extractions to gum disease treatment and jaw fracture repairs.
The Surgery Process
We will complete a thorough pre-surgical assessment before any surgery. This includes a physical examination of your pet as well as blood tests to find out whether they are at risk of anesthesia-related complications.
During each surgery, a dedicated nurse will administer anesthesia and continuously monitor your pet using electronic patient monitoring equipment. We will also provide your pet with adequate pain management while they are undergoing the procedure.
Post-operative monitoring and pain management become our priorities following surgery. When your companion is ready to head home, we will provide detailed instructions for at-home care and how to administer prescribed medications.
Sterilization Protocols
Surgical protocols at our clinic include dedicated surgical suites which are kept completely sterile to prevent infection and cross-contamination.
Our staff wear sterile attire at all times when inside the surgical suite, and we carefully clean, sterilize and wrap our surgical instruments and equipment to prepare for surgery.
