Vaginal Cytology

In reproductive Medicine, vaginal cytology is a technique used to attempt to predict the optimal time to breed. During a heat period, vaginal cells undergo a series of predictable changes. By viewing vaginal cells under the microscope, one can get an impression as to what stage a dog is at in her heat cycle. Usually, the test will be run more than once so that the changes in the cells can be viewed over time. This allows for a better prediction of optimal breeding time.
